85mmの画角で得られるもの / What you can capture with an 85mm lens

These are the photos I took during the photo walk in Atami, Shizuoka in the first half of February. This is the second half of the walk following the last blog post.

I often go for a 35 or 50mm lens for a photo walk, so when I walk with an 85, it takes some time to get accustomed to the difference of the distances and angles.

Still there are some merits. The narrow angle of view offers so many possible compositions with one subject. And no distraction will be included in the frame, so I think it easily lets viewers' imagination run. Of course, these are my personal thoughts.

I captured the photo above on the way from Atami Ginza, a shopping street near the beach, to Atami station. I got off the main street and found this dead end alley. The place looks partly desolate and partly nostalgic. A young school boy would pop out from behind the house.

Hmm. The 85mm angle of view is actually inspiring.

Atami is full of slopes and stairs.
The facade of the shopping mall near the station. It looked like there were more tourists.
It was just the shadow of a railing. I like this kind of nothingness.
Is it a wall or a drop-off? Or is a house?
The remnant of the old days.
What would I see on top of the stairs?
A closed hotel. It says economy, but what was economy? I want to know it.

The character we don't use any more. When was it written?
Is the graffiti first, or the plant first?
I spotted a slope over there.
So I walked over and see how it looked. The pink house looked a bit out of place.
No trespass. But apparently someone did.
This one was not taken in Atami. I saw Mt. Fuji on the way home. It was incredibly cold out there and I spent only 10 seconds outside the car.

85mmで熱海の散歩 / A photo walk in Atami, a tourist spa town in Sizuoka

It was in the first half of February. After I took photos of Japanese white-eyes and the early-blossoming cherries with the 80-400mm lens, I went for the 85mm prime lens and enjoyed walked around the town of Atami in Shizuoka prefecture.

When I was a child, my family often went to a facility in Atami, which was owned by the company my grandmother was working at. We visited the town about twice a year. I loved to stroll around the town and play games in the amusement centers along the streets. The town is full of my childhood memories.

Atami was one of the destinations for honeymoon in 1950s and 60s, but it gradually went out of fashion. A lot of hotels had been torn down by the end of the last century. So I'm glad to see the town seems to be reviving.

Anyway, the question is the fruit in the photo above. It looked like a plum tree, but I don't think it produces fruits when its flowers are blooming. Also, the size of the fruit is strangely large. Do you know what that is??

I was happy to see my pet name "Taka" on the wall of a shop.
I found the window of sunlight on the wall along the Ito River.
My family often brought me to this cafe. My favorite was a special custard pudding.
The remnant of old days. It was a lady's clothes shop. Now it is a souvenir shop.
There's a small cinema along this street.
I found an old cafe bar. I don't think the name is suitable for the present days ...
The stairs caught my eyes.
And I found the fruit on the tree. It looked like a plum tree, but what was that fruit??

The best lens to play with white-eyes and Atami cherry blossoms

I went to Atami in Shizuoka and played with birds named Mejiro, Japanese white-eyes. I was one week late for Atami cherry blossoms' peak but it was OK. What I want to do was play with the birds, not to enjoy the pink flowers.
