Reverse Gradation ND 8 only (f/9, 1/30 sec)

Reverse Gradation ND 8 + ND 1000 (f/9, 30 sec)

Reverse Gradation ND 8 + ND 1000 (f/9, 60 sec)

Reverse Gradation ND 8 + ND 1000 (f/9, 90 sec)

I had a chance to try Nisi's ND Filters in Lake Yamanaka, Yamanasi prefecture. The gear I used there was the Nikon D810 and the AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. As I wrote in the previous post, the exclusive filter holder has to be used to attach the big glass filters in front of the lens.

One of the filters I used is called Reverse Gradation ND. Its bottom half is transparent, and its upper half is gradational gray. This filter is especially useful at sunrise or sunset.

I used this filter and the ND 1000 filter that is pitch black. The latter is for gaining the exposure time during the daytime.

The results are the four images above.

From top to bottom:
Reverse Gradation ND 8 only (f/9, 1/30 sec)
Reverse Gradation ND 8 + ND 1000 (f/9, 30 sec)
Reverse Gradation ND 8 + ND 1000 (f/9, 60 sec)
Reverse Gradation ND 8 + ND 1000 (f/9, 90 sec)

I didn't change the camera setting while taking the last three shots, and the 60-second exposure was the best. I needed to adjust the brightness of 30- and 90-second exposure shots in post-processing.

My favorite one is the 30-second exposure shot. Which one is yours?

150mm Holder System
・AR ND 1000(3.0) 150x150mm
・Soft nano GND8(0.9) 150x170mm
・Reverse nano GND8(0.9) 150x170mm

NiSi Filters kindly let me try out its ND filters for the AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, one of my go-to lenses for urban landscape photos.

As some of you may know, the lenses huge front lens prevents users to attach usual kind of filters. So, people need to get a specially designed filter holder, and insert large glass filters into it.

What I have received are these:

・150mm Holder System for theAF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
・AR ND 1000(3.0) 150x150mm
・Soft nano GND8(0.9) 150x170mm
・Reverse nano GND8(0.9) 150x170mm

I didn't have any plans for shooting on the first day, so I just tried the Reverse Gradation ND filter to capture the sunset sky from my home window. This filter is transparent at the bottom half, and is gray in the middle which gradually becomes brighter to the top edge.

The first shot was taken without the filter, while the second one was shot with it. The effect is just outstanding as you can see the difference. FYI, both of the photos are SOOC, without any post-processing.

The filters will be easily available in Japan, the company says, so I'll introduce some more variations and use them for my landscape shots.
