この日は明大前にある明大和泉キャンパスに用事があった。その後、子どものころによく遊んだ玉川上水公園（僕は上水公園と呼んでいた）を歩き、標準50ミリでスナップしながら家に帰ろうと思っていた。

玉川上水公園は昔の水路（僕の母は水が流れていた時代を知っているらしい）の上にできた公園で、全長２、３キロほどの細長い公園だ。

子どものころはその東端に近いところに住んでいて、「冒険」と称して西の端まで歩いたことがあった。今はその西端に近いところに住んでいて、明大のある東側から歩くと、公園を通り抜けて家の方まで行けるのだ。

そんなわけで、写真散歩開始！　カメラを取り出したら、カメラにマウントされていたのは、僕が信じて疑わなかった50ミリの標準レンズではなく、前日に夕日を撮った12-24ミリの超広角レンズだった。驚いた。

どのくらい驚いたかというと、今まで人間だったのに、とつぜんキリンになったことに気づいたくらいの驚きだ。

……って、何を言っているかわからないよね。

つまりは、思っていた絵とぜんぜん違う絵しか撮れない。そのまま帰ろうかと思った。でも、よく考えるまでもなく、帰る方向は公園を抜ける道だった。そんなわけで、結局、キリンの視野を持ったまま、とぼとぼと写真散歩への向かっただった。

I had something to do near the station what is three stops away from my nearest station. So after I finished it, I wanted to walk through the park where I used to play with my friends almost every day when I was an elementary school child. The lens I thought I had in my bag was a 50 mm lens.

The park was made over the aqueduct. It was narrow and about 2 or 3 kilometers long. When I was a child I lived near its east end, and now I live near its west end. So that day, I was able to walk through the park and went home.

"OK, let's start the photo walk!" I thought to myself and took the camera out. And I realized that the lens on the camera was not the 50 mm. It was 12-24 mm super-wide angle lens. I just didn't remember I had changed the lenses to capture the sunset sky on the previous day ... I was shocked.

How was I shocked? It's like I, human, suddenly was turned into a giraffe by magic!

I know you don't understand what I wrote. Anyway ...

What I meant was I was only able to capture totally different pictures from what I intended. So I thought I would just go home dropping the idea of walking through the park. But I also knew that the home was in the same direction. Hmm, I, with a vision of a giraffe, started to walk through a park.

子どものころによく遊んだのは、玉川上水第二公園と第三公園。ここでは遊ばなかった。
The aqueduct park is divided in four sections. I used to play in its 2nd and 3rd park. I didn't often visit this section.

見ての通り、子どもが遊ぶ感じからは程遠い。
As you can tell, this section is not child-friendly.

そしてこちらが大二公園の端っこ。ローラースケートコースがある。。一度だけやりに来たことがある。
This is the east end of the 2nd park. There is a circuit for roller-skaters that I tried just once when I was a child.

超広角で普通の風景を撮ると、周囲が引っ張られるように見えて好きじゃない。
I just don't like the edges of the picture got stretched with the widest angle.

超広角で面白い絵はないかと探す。これは船の形をした遊具。
So, I needed to find an interesting composition with the widest angle. This was the front edge of a ship-shaped play equipment.

12mmではなく、ズームで24mmを使うと慣れた画角に近くなって安心。
With the lens' 24 mm angle, the picture looks more normal.

日本の公園にもワニがいる。
Be careful! There were alligators in the park!

日差しが強くて休憩している人ゼロ。
No one was resting under the strong sunlight. It was a hot day.

みんなどこに行ったんだろう。
Where had all the children gone?

ネコを撮ろうとしたけれど、超広角はそれに向かない。右上端っこに逃げられた。
I tried to capture a walking cat with the lens but failed. See the cat in the top right corner?

ローアングルを試してみる。
I tried the lowest angle.

細い公園だから、こういう絵を撮るには広角がいい。
The park was so narrow that the lens worked well in capturing a subject like this.

さきほど見かけたゾウの遊具が別の場所にもあった。これは子どものときにはなかった気がする。
I found the same elephant play equipment at another spot. When I was a child, it was not there.

おやおや、キリンもいるではないか。向こうにもこういう風に僕が見えているはず。
Oh, I met a giraffe. I was sure that its vision was just like mine through the lens.

後ずさって退散。
I stepped back and said goodbye to the giraffe.

この日、何年ぶりか何十年ぶりかに「今、何時ですか」と見知らぬ人に声をかけれた。かけてきたのは小学生の女の子２人組で、「この子のね、時計が壊れちゃって時間がわからないの。でね、今何時かなと思ってね」。言い訳がましいのは、時間を聞くのに緊張したからか。

「４時ちょっと前」と教えてあげると、２人は顔を見合わせて、帰るかと思いきや、また遊びはじめた。君たちね、そうやってまた、時間を忘れちゃうんだよ。と心の中でつぶやいたけれど、声に出して教えてはやらない。

A pair of girls asked me what time it was. It was a question that I hadn't heard from a stranger for more than a decade. One of the girl told me, "Her watch is broken and we don't know what time it is." It sounded like an excuse. They must have been nervous to ask the time to a stranger.

"It was just before 4," I told them. They glanced at each other and started playing again on the nearest play equipment. I thought, "You will forget the time again. You should leave the park and go home." But I thought they should learn such a lesson by themselves.

The two girls kept playing on the locomotive.

こういう葉っぱを見つけると、葉を指でもんで、指に付いた香りを確認したくなる。
I often rub my fingers against such leaves and check the smell.

公園のゲートを上から。「ポールのミラクル大作戦」に出てきたキノッピーの頭を思い出した。
I remembered the head of a mush-room cartoon character featured in the animation that I liked.

見つめ合う親子。
A parent and its child.

子どものときに何度も遊んだ迷路。
This is the maze I often played in when I was a little child.

子どものときに何度も乗ったブランコ。
This is the swing set that I liked.

この先に進むと、子どものころの僕にとっては「知らない世界への冒険」の領域。ほんの数キロでも家からはとても遠く感じた。
From here, the adventure to the unknown world began when I was a child. It was only a few kilometers away from then home but it felt like far far away.
