野島崎の残骸 / The Debris in Nojimazaki, Chiba(SIGMA 20mm f1.4 DG、NiSI ND1000+ND8+GND8)

Nikon D810, SIGMA 20mm f/1.4 DG

Nojimazaki is the southernmost place in Boso Peninsula, Chiba prefecture. This place used to be an island, but the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1920s raised the land and connected it with the mainland.

When I was there, I shot waves at the seashore, and then took a position at the end of a breakwater. Looking down from the height, I saw some debris that once should have been a building. I had no idea what it had been, though.

I spent time contemplating on such things, without stopping moving my body. It was February and the harsh winter wind was just unbearable ...

In winter, the clouds tend to disappear at sunset because of the dropping temperature. The sky didn't look so attractive that day, either, but I was satisfied I was able to see the sun going down in the horizon.

Below are the sunset I captured with the second camera.

See you again tomorrow!

CP+ 2018最終日、フィルターホルダー「S5」を入手 / I received the S5 filter holder on the last day of CP+ 2018 in Yokohama

I helped NiSi to operate their booth at CP+ 2018. I also held the seminar about ND filters four times. I got tired but had great fun. During the seminar, I always took my gear out of the bag in front of the audience, and left it as sort of like a part of NiSi's product display.

And on the last day, I realized that I should "use" it instead of just leaving it. So my camera worked for 30 minutes and captured the booth.

After we closed the booth, I received a new S5 filter holder kit. I replace my old holder for Nikon's 14-24mm with the brand-new holder.

This time, I'll introduce what is included in the S5 kit.

The exclusive bag for the S5 kit. There is a loop with Velcro tape. The bag can be attached to a tripod leg.
The filter holder and lens adapter is inside the bag like this.
The C-PL filter included in the set can be stored in the side pocket. This filter is huge. It's about 15 centimeter in diameter.
(Clockwise from the top) Lens adapter, filter holder and C-PL filter.
You can turn the ring to make the adapter fit the lens hood. The new adapter will never fall off from the lens.
The filter holder is compatible with a different adapter. It holds up to two square filters. I wish it held three ...
I translated the instruction manual for NiSi. I also write Japanese explanation for their new product leaflet.

One of the great advancements is that the filter folder will never fall off from the lens. Now I don't have to so worry about breaking glass filters by dropping them on the ground :)

A Sunrise in the Fog Captured with ND Filters

It was a morning more than a half year ago.

I left home at around one in the morning. I wanted to capture the starry sky and the morning light in one frame. When I left home, the sky looked so clear. But as soon as I arrived at the beach (Shimotsu Beach in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture), the atmosphere started to be enveloped in the fog.

I didn't see things so well around me. I just waited for the sunrise at the seashore or in the coming waves. I felt lonely but it was an invaluable experience.

Did I capture the moon or anything else? The atmosphere was so dreamy.
It was well past the time of sunrise. The Venus belt appeared in the western sky.
My main camera on the tripod had nothing to do at the time.

The windmills emerged behind the thick fog.
The number of the surfers had increased before I knew it.
The golden light engulfed the beach. I felt enchanted.

The photos below are the ones my main camera on the tripod captured. I chose the second one as the main visual for my photo exhibition I held in September, 2017.

I gave up capturing the sunrise because of the sky condition.
The sky was getting brighter.

The sky has gotten brighter, so I changed the filters.
ND 64
The sun came out suddenly. I hurried to do everything not to miss the moment.
ND1000
This is one of the moments I loved most from that day.

My Way of Using a Camera Sling

f/11 90 sec. ISO 32 (Expanded)
I bought a camera sling the other day, and I wrote about it on this blog entry. When you hang your camera on your shoulder, the sling drapes like a scarf and reduces the weight of the camera. You can also wrap your camera with the sling when you put it in your bag. It is a very useful and fashionable camera tool.

The reason I bought this sling is not that I have a pain in my neck or shoulder. The reason is that I want to use it when I take photos using square ND filters from NiSi Filters.

See the photos above. You can cover the filters with the sling to prevent sunlight from coming in between the filters. When you use more than one filters, the light can cause unwanted flares on the photos. To prevent the light, I always had to carry cloth to cover the filters, but not anymore. With the sling, I can easily do it within seconds.

Also, I realized the fact that the sling covers the view finder. Sometimes I forgot to close the finder cover so that the light doesn't come in through the view finder glass, but I don't have to worry about it anymore, either.

Two good things come with the sling. Oh, no. Three things. What's the third one? I'm a more fashionable person now :)

By the way, the last photo was taken with the new tool. The weather was not good, but I was very happy with the outcome thanks to the sling.

Rainbow Bridge

f/9, 60 secs., ISO 100, NiSi AR ND 1000, AR ND 8

f/9, 1/250 sec., ISO 100 without filters

Dark clouds had covered the sky when I went out., but when I reached Rainbow Bridge, summer clouds are running across the clear and blue sky. This time I used NiSi's two square filters together: AR ND 1000 and AR ND 8.

I tried 30-second exposure (ISO 200), 60 seconds (ISO 100) and 90 seconds (ISO 64), and the above is the 60-sec version. I went with f/9 for all the shots.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings /

f/9, 120 sec., ISO 64, ND 1000 + ND 8

f/9, 1/100 sec., ISO 64
It was the first time for me to take photos of these buildings in Shinjuku, and it may have been my first to do so during the daytime. This time, I used both ND 1000 and ND 8 filters to go with a wider aperture than f/16. f/9 was what I chose.

The bottom one was taken without filters. Some people might say they like the upper one while the other the bottom one. It is a matter of taste.

FYI, I adjusted the color temperature and compensated the exposure of the buildings.
