立石海岸から長時間露光で水平線を見る / Taking a long-exposure photo of the horizon from Tateishi Beach

久しぶりにじっと水平線を見た。流れる雲を見て、波の音に耳を傾けた。下はこの写真を撮っているときにiPhoneで撮った動画。こうやって見ると、ゆらゆら波がきらめく動画で海を見るのも悪くない。

It was my first to spend time at the seashore, gazing at the horizon in about eight months. While taking the long-exposure shot above, I took a video of the same view. It's kind of nice to watch the same view again in two different ways.

前回のブログでも書いたが、この日は初めてNiSiのS5フィルターホルダー・キットを持ち出した日。下の写真はS5をNIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8Gに装着したところ。

As I wrote in the previous blog post, I used NiSi's S5 filter holder kit for the first time. The photo below shows how the holder was mounted on the camera.

そして下は望遠で遠くの岩を撮った写真。最初の写真と動画の右上に見えている岩だ。この鳥たちは最初の写真にも小さく実体を残して写ってくれた。

And the next photo shows the rocks seen in the first photo and the video. It located in the right side. The birds were also visible (very small though) in the first photo, too.

海辺で動かないのは写真家と釣り人だけだと思っていたが、どうもそうではないらしい。

I had thought only photographers and anglers were standing still on the seashore, but it seems I was wrong.

三浦半島に行くといつも立ち寄っていた一食堂（はじめしょくどう）に、久しぶりに行きたくなった。

そんなわけで、昨年の８月から数えて7カ月ぶりに、三脚を担いで海辺に出ることにした。

ところが！

I was urged to go to a diner I frequented while I was doing my seascape project last year. So I decided to bring my camera gear and headed for Miura Peninsula. But ...

一年間続けたプロジェクトの間足繁く通った定食屋は、なんとラーメン屋に変貌していた。

マグロ漬け丼が食べたかったのに……。超ショック！！

気を取り直して、ほかの店で食事をして海辺へ。どこに行くとも決めていなかったので、そのときの気分で立石海岸に向かった。

下の写真に写っているのは、この日の機材。食堂に行くのがメインだった割には、一通りの道具がかばんに入っている。三脚をフレームインさせるのを忘れた。

The diner had changed into a ramen shop. I just couldn't believe what there was in front of me. My stomach was ready for Tuna(Maguro) Don(Rice Bowl) so I didn't want to eat any ramen at all.

Anyway, I found another restaurant nearby and went to Tateishi Beach. These are my gear I had brought with me that day. The main objective is to eat a rice bowl but everything I needed was in the bag.

そしてこの日は、NiSiのS5フィルターホルダーキットを始動させた日。下の写真はアダプターリングを装着したNIKKOR 24-70 f/2.8Eに装着したところ。

And it was the first day I tried my new filter holder sistem, NiSi's S5. The photo below shows how the holder was attached to the lens. The lens was Nikon's 24-70mm f/2.8E. With an exclusive adapter ring, you can attach the S5 kit for Nikon's 14-24mm f/2.8G to it.

S5のアダプターの良いところは、リングを締めるとしっかり固定され、外れることがなくなったことだ。

前は、フィルターホルダーを装着した状態でカメラを下に向けるのが怖かった。なぜなら、ホルダー＋フィルターの自重で外れて落下してしまうことがあったから。岩場でガラス製のフィルターが落下したら…。怖い怖い。

ところがこの新しいシステムは、三脚の雲台がはずみでおじぎしてしまう程度のショックではびくともしなくなった。新システム万歳！

そんなわけで、ウキウキとカメラを下に向けて撮った、最初の写真なのである。

The best thing about the new S5 adapter is that once you attach the adapter to the lens hood, it will never fall off.

With the previous models, I didn't want to point my camera downward because the holder often go loose and fall off to the ground. You don't want such a thing happen on the rocky shore, right? Now, I don't have to worry about it at all. So for the photo at the top of this post, I happily pointed my camera downward at the rocks in the foreground.

フィルターワークで捉えた霧の朝 / A Sunrise in the Fog Captured with ND Filters

もう半年以上前の朝だ。

この日は午前１時に家を出て、海辺の夜明けの星空を撮ろうと鹿島の下津海岸というところに行った。それまでいい具合に晴れていたのに、着いたとたんにあたりは霧に包まれた。

何も見えないなか、日が昇るまでの数時間を波打ち際、もしくは波の中で待つ。孤独だけれど貴重な経験をした朝だったと思う。

It was a morning more than a half year ago.

I left home at around one in the morning. I wanted to capture the starry sky and the morning light in one frame. When I left home, the sky looked so clear. But as soon as I arrived at the beach (Shimotsu Beach in Kashima, Ibaraki Prefecture), the atmosphere started to be enveloped in the fog.

I didn't see things so well around me. I just waited for the sunrise at the seashore or in the coming waves. I felt lonely but it was an invaluable experience.

月を撮ったのか何を撮ったのか。不思議な空。
Did I capture the moon or anything else? The atmosphere was so dreamy.

日の出の時間を過ぎた。ビーナスベルトが西の空に見え始めた。
It was well past the time of sunrise. The Venus belt appeared in the western sky.

固定したメインカメラはこの時間になって、撮るものがなくなった。
My main camera on the tripod had nothing to do at the time.

霧の向こうに風車が見えてきた。
The windmills emerged behind the thick fog.

いつの間にかサーファーの数が増えた。
The number of the surfers had increased before I knew it.

辺り一面が黄金に包まれ不思議な気分になった。
The golden light engulfed the beach. I felt enchanted.

では、改めて固定したメインカメラが捉えたこの日の朝を時系列で。予想しなかった朝の光景だったが、3枚目の写真が気に入って昨年の個展のメインビジュアルに選んだ。

The photos below are the ones my main camera on the tripod captured. I chose the second one as the main visual for my photo exhibition I held in September, 2017.

霧で霞んで朝日を諦めたころ。最初はフィルターなし。
I gave up capturing the sunrise because of the sky condition.

空が明るくなってきた。
The sky was getting brighter.

空が明るくなったのでNDフィルターを急いで交換した。
The sky has gotten brighter, so I changed the filters.

のんびりしていたら朝日が顔を出して慌てた。急いでND1000に交換。
The sun came out suddenly. I hurried to do everything not to miss the moment.

This is one of the moments I loved most from that day.
この日に撮ったなかでもお気に入りの瞬間。

今回の機材

ND1000＋GND8で横浜ベイブリッジを撮る / Captured Yokohama Bay Bridge with NiSi's ND1000 and GND8 Filters

横浜の大黒ふ頭に行った。以前はここから上れた横浜ベイブリッジのスカイウォークも閉鎖されて久しい。周辺は手入れされないまま放置された感じで、寂しい。釣り人天国。そのほかには誰もいない。来る理由もない、そんな場所になっていた。

殆どの場所は立入禁止で歩き回る余地もないので、すぐにアングルを決めて撮影に入った。釣り人のじゃまにならないように、また、逆に釣りざおで邪魔されないように気を使いながら。

薄雲で面白みのない空でNDフィルターを使った長時間露光。

さて、どんな風に仕上がるのか。

使ったのはNiSiのAR ND 1000とAR GND 8の2枚。後者はフィルターの上に行くに従って暗く写るようになっているグラデーション仕様のフィルターだ。

結果はというと、静かな「記憶の中の風景」のような一枚になった。

参考までにノーフィルターの風景はこんな感じ。

I visited Daikoku Pier in Yokohama. Usually people see Yokohama Bay Bridge from Yamashita Park or Osanbashi International Passenger Terminal, so the pier is located on the other side of the bridge. From there, we used to go up Sky Walk, the pedestrian passage on the bridge and enjoy the view of the bay from above. The passage has been closed for a long time. People have stopped visiting this side of the bridge, so I saw only fishers when I visited there.

Most of the places have off-limit signs. There was nothing to see but the bridge itself. So I started to take photos as soon as I got there, trying not to bother the fishers, and not to be bothered by their fishing rods.

There was no cloud in the sky. Using ND filters might have not been a good idea but I tried anyway. The result is the one at the top. I kind of like the faded colors. It looks like a scene in a distant memory. What do you think?

レインボーブリッジ / Rainbow Bridge

台風の影響もあって、自宅周辺は曇り空。曇り空でフィルターを使ってみようと思って出かけてみたら、レインボーブリッジ近くは予想外によい天気。それならということで、タイミングを待ってNiSiのND 1000とND 8を重ねて試してみた。30秒（ISO 200)、60秒（ISO 100）、90秒（ISO 64）と露出時間を変えて撮影してみた（f値は9で固定）。

ここでは上で紹介した60秒のバージョンと、フィルターなしのバージョンでの雲や海面の見え方の違いを比較していただきたい。

そして、下は撮影風景。

雲はどんどん流れて行くから、思ったタイミングでシャッターを切るのは難しい。特に夏場は長時間露光時のノイズリダクションをオンにするから、「いい！」と思った瞬間にジリジリとカメラが仕事をしている最中だったりする。

タイミングを待ってシャッターを切る。これは基本なのだけれど、雲は思ったようには流れない。だから楽しさが倍増……するかもしれない。

ちなみにこの後、空はどんどん黒い雲で覆われ、嵐の様相を呈してきたのでさっさと帰途についた。

Dark clouds had covered the sky when I went out., but when I reached Rainbow Bridge, summer clouds are running across the clear and blue sky. This time I used NiSi's two square filters together: AR ND 1000 and AR ND 8.

I tried 30-second exposure (ISO 200), 60 seconds (ISO 100) and 90 seconds (ISO 64), and the above is the 60-sec version. I went with f/9 for all the shots.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Buildings / 東京都庁舎

f/9, 120 sec., ISO 64, ND 1000 + ND 8

東京都庁舎を撮ったのは久しぶりだった。とはいってもじっくり撮ったわけではなく、今回は、ND 1000とND 8を重ねての撮影実験。２枚を重ねたのは、f/16とかまで絞らなくても、長い間シャッターを開け放しにできるのではないかと考えたから。

今回はf/9で２分。直射光が入っていないから、これくらいでちょうど良かった。夏の空は大気が不安定で、高さによって雲の流れる方向が違うから、帰省ラッシュを象徴するような、かなりごちゃごちゃと忙しい空になった。

そして下の写真は、長時間露光を始める前に、同じ設定でフィルター無しで撮ったもの。どちらがいいかは好みの問題だと思う。

ちなみに長時間露光の方は、撮影後に色温度の調整、ビル部分の露出補正を行っているので、念のため。

It was the first time for me to take photos of these buildings in Shinjuku, and it may have been my first to do so during the daytime. This time, I used both ND 1000 and ND 8 filters to go with a wider aperture than f/16. f/9 was what I chose.

The bottom one was taken without filters. Some people might say they like the upper one while the other the bottom one. It is a matter of taste.

FYI, I adjusted the color temperature and compensated the exposure of the buildings.

千葉の市原に出かけた帰り道に、海辺から東京湾アクアラインを眺めてきた。

思い起こせばこの近くで車を降りたのは、近所にある竜宮城スパ、ホテル三日月の流れるプールのような温泉で泳いで以来。そのときはまだアクアラインはなかった。

この日は昼間はピーカンに近い晴天だったが、午後の遅い時間から雲が多くなってきた。到着したのはまだ日没の１時間ほど前。写真に興味のない人と一緒だったため、延々と撮影していると嫌がられる。先にあたりを歩いてアングルを２つ決め、さっさと撮影して仕事を終えた。

が日没一時間ほど前の陽光に、強風に乗った海水の飛沫（？）輝き、幻想的な雰囲気のアクアラインを撮ることができたから、夕焼けは見なかったけれども満足。

慌てて仕事をしたから、ノーフィルターバージョンを撮り忘れた。下は帰る前に押さえたもの。光の具合が違うけれど、雲や海の表情がNDを使ったものとはまったく異なる。

そうそう、きれいな夕日を渋滞したアクアラインの車窓から眺め、その後、海ほたるSAで日没後の東京湾の空を堪能した。そのときのそらをおまけに一枚。

I visited Chiba prefecture that day. On my way home, I decided to see the bridge of Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line from the coast.

It was a cloudless day but by the time I reached the foot of the bridge, the sky was covered with clouds. Still, the sunlight came through from time to time. The wind was very strong, and it was blowing off the spray of sea water. When the sun came out and illuminated humid air, the bridge looked like the one leading to another world.

To tell you the truth, I didn't have much time there (my girlfriend was waiting for me to finish my job quickly.), so I captured the bridge in just two angles hurriedly, with and without the NiSi's filters for your comparison.

The last shot was the sunset sky I saw later that day. I didn't try anything special for this shot, but I just wanted to tell you that I had to leave the bridge too early, but I didn't miss the sunset sly anyway.
